Hawaiian Fire's Aloha Monday - Aloha to 2011 from San Diego

Aloha Monday for the first time in 2011 everyone! It feels good to type those words again as it's been a little while since I've graced the blogger site to construct a good 'ol Aloha Monday. For those of you new our blog since I left and not sure who "I" is referring to... this is Ryan Miller. Braddah to Kevin Miller and former Operations Manager at HF. I may be better known as "Baby Milla'" courtesy of one BJ Mahoy at station 7 or "Miller Light" to other stations around the island. The list of nicknames for me also may include..."Merk", "Spicoli", "Lyon" (Thanks for patenting that one Keigo my ex roommate who wrote his first rent check to Lyon Miller....and last but not least.."Ey Haole!". I have to say the latter one probably got the most use over in the islands but not so much these days. Either way you put it I still got the Aloha Spirit coursing through my veins and couldn't be happier to have had a Hawaiian education to bring back and share with the mainland and all the people that grew up with me back in the day. So...Where did we leave off??

Well last thing you guys all heard was Kev's unreal farewell tribute blog to Nami and I. I have to say i got a little watery eyed reading it as some of the best years of my life were spent in Hawaii but the good news is that nothing is forever and although San Diego is my hometown whether you guys like it or not Hawaii is my home and I will be back very frequently throughout my lifetime assuming some things all go to plan. I debated on whether or not to drop the bombshell of my main motivation for the jump back to the mainland but Kev went ahead and took care of that decision for me. So yes....let it be known that I am in San Diego to find someway, somehow, to input my energy directly into the San Diego (Hopefully not soon the Los Angeles) Chargers, rather than just shouting at a glass screen all day long or from the stands. I don't want to get to deep into that at the moment but more information will come out as the story unfolds and as I press on in my pursuit of the bolt. Beyond my Chargers ambitions, it has been and continues to be my goal to help spread the Hawaiian Fire Joe word outside of Oahu and onto the mainland while at the same time repping HF merchandise over here like its going out of style. (Which it never will don't worry...Hawaii, Surfing and Firefighting pretty much have the immunity idol of coolness for all eternity). Along with all that fun I've managed to stay busy with a few freelancing photography gigs and even a job as a production assistant for a killer Production company that puts on shows for all sorts of sports related events and products. I have to say the production assistant role is the best fitting thus far since I was delegated to the role I was born to play.."Token White/Haole Kid". I made a great group of new friends there and have managed to connect even more so with old friends and family here including the wedding of the first guy in my group of friends to take the plunge. Beyond that, Nami is adjusting to her California lifestyle quite well and I do believe Mom Miller done found another grandchild in the form a Pitbull/Sharpei. I think its safe to say I'm doing my best to keep it classy in San Diego and spending the Holidays with the fam for the first time in 7 years were some much needed good times.
This is the time of the blog where I have to hit that semi serious note and spit a little bit of my heart on the table so Sean Kelly you can just go through the pics from here on out I know you're not into that sort of thing...haha. In all seriousness...my decision to leave the place where I learned so much and met so many AMAZING people was probably one of the hardest ones I've ever had to make. Much so like my entrance to Hawaii my exit was abrupt, spontaneous, and without certainty as to what might lie ahead. I think one of the most important lessons I have learned in life thus far is to embrace opportunities that present themselves to you despite the initial fear of the unknown that may seem initially overwhelming. Those are the moments where you can really make anything you want yours, If you are afraid to take those risks you may end up missing out on something you had no idea was even there. I mean all it took was one sentence..."Hey, Why don't you go check out Kev in Hawaii for a little bit?" That was all it took to change my mind in in effect that changed tens of thousands of peoples lives that I came in contact with via the surf school...I'm straying off on a tangent here but what I really want to hit at are the people who made my experience in Hawaii so special. From every surf student to every surf instructor to every other friend or person I crossed paths with on the islands, I couldn't be more stoked to have met each and every one of you and shoot a HUGE MAHALO out to you all. I know I have made my share of mistakes and there's a handful if not more of you that might want to give me the finger next time you see me. I hope that's not the case but hey, I'm well aware that sometimes I can be an @$$hole and not even realize it. This last couple months of mainland time has given some great perspective to me and never have I felt more humbled and fortunate to be alive than I do now. This life is all about the people we come in contact with and what we do with those relationships. The more bridges you burn the further off the right path you become. I'm not saying there is one "right" path for everyone but lets just say Karma is for real and leave it at that. One more mahalo for those of you that put so much of your energy into Hawaiian Fire and an even bigger mahalo to Sean, Noah, Kazu, Kevin and John for putting up with/believing in me and that also goes for every other office worker that's had to hit the window alarm for yours truly. Just know all you guys are my family for life whether you like it or not and get ready to hit the surf because I will be back on island from Jan 24th - Feb 1st!! Hmm...I wonder if that has anything to do with that NFL game I heard they are playing in Hawaii a week before the Superbowl. Do you think NFL players might like surfing?? (The answer is yes, yes, and please hit up any contacts you guys have and get these guys and their family out in the water for a true Hawaiian Holiday. Aloha Monday to my online Ohana! I hope to see a lot of friendly faces soon and let's make the best of 2011 it's gonna be a good year...

PS....LAST AND CERTAINLY FAR FROM LEAST THANK YOU TO JACKIE M AND THE GIRLS FOR KEEPIN' THE ALOHA MONDAY SPIRIT ALIVE!!! IT MEANS A LOT TO ME THAT THIS THING IS STILL UP, RUNNING, AND BEING READ BY MORE THAN JUST NAMI AND I :-)
